Academic Regulation

Academic regulations at Loknayak Jai Prakash Institute of Technology (LNJPIT), Chapra are governed by Bihar Engineering University (BEU), Patna (under the Department of Science, Technology & Technical Education, Government of Bihar). Prior to 2023, the institute followed Aryabhatta Knowledge University (AKU) regulations, but all ongoing B.Tech batches now adhere to BEU academic ordinances.

1. Attendance Policy

  • Mandatory Requirement: A minimum of 75% aggregate attendance across lectures, tutorials, and laboratories is required to appear in the University End-Semester Examinations.

  • Condonation: Up to 15% relaxation (minimum 60% attendance) may be condoned by the Principal only on genuine medical or compassionate grounds, subject to valid documentation.

  • Attendance Marks (Internal Assessment): Up to 5 marks per subject are awarded proportionally based on class attendance:

    • >=95%: 5 marks

    • 90% – 94.9%: 4 marks

    • 85% – 89.9%: 3 marks

    • 80% – 84.9%: 2 marks

    • 75% – 79.9%: 1 mark

    • <75%: 0 marks

2. Evaluation & Examination Scheme

Theory Courses (100 Marks Total)

  • Internal Assessment (30 Marks):

    • Mid-Semester Examination (2 hours): 20 marks

    • Quizzes / Assignments / Class Tests: 5 marks

    • Attendance: 5 marks

    • Attendance: 5 marks

  • End-Semester Practical Exam (30 Marks):

3. Passing Criteria

To clear any course, two criteria must be met independently:

  1. End-Semester Component: Minimum 35% in the End-Semester Examination alone (at least 24.5 out of 70 in theory; 10.5 out of 30 in practicals).

  2. Aggregate Component: Minimum 35% in total (Internal + End Semester combined, i.e. >=35 out of 100 for theory; >=17.5 out of 50 for practicals).

4. Promotion & Backlog Policy

  • Semester Progression: Under current BEU regulations, students are generally promoted to the next succeeding semester irrespective of CGPA.

  • Supplementary Examinations: A supplementary exam cycle is conducted each academic session to enable students with an ‘F’ (Fail), ‘I’ (Incomplete), or ‘X’ grade to clear backlogs without waiting a full year.

  • Maximum Duration: A standard 4-year B.Tech program must be completed within a maximum of 7 to 8 academic years (6 years for Lateral Entry students).

5. Grading System

Academic performance is measured on a 10-point scale:

  • SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average): Calculated at the end of each semester based on course credits and letter grade points.

  • CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average): Cumulative weighted performance across all completed semesters.

  • Degree Classification: Typically, a CGPA of >=6.5 qualifies for First Class, with >= 7.5 (and clearing all courses in the first attempt) qualifying for First Class with Distinction.

6. Institute Code of Conduct & Mandatory Policies

  • Anti-Ragging Compliance: Complete zero-tolerance policy following AICTE/UGC guidelines. Every student must submit an online anti-ragging undertaking at the start of each session.

  • Mandatory Internships / MOOCs: In line with AICTE model curriculum, students must complete industrial training/internships (allowed in hybrid/online mode as approved by BEU) and earn designated credits through NPTEL/SWAYAM courses before degree completion.
